HELLO SIR! *saluting..burp/fart* It's your cousin Vinnie!! Yes, Alan has a cousin Vinnie. Straight outa Jersey people!! Anyway, I just figured I'd say hello...I love the website, and am sorry I missed your sisters wedding, but I'm in a part-time police academy now, and I can't leave. Either way, you all looked great, especially her. Damn her husband's tall!! Well anybody 5'10"+ is tall to me...gotta love being 100% Italian, and getting the shortness. Anyway, back to your site.....I'm gonna send you a K-9 coin as soon as we get them in. It's not exactly "P.C." and fit for your website, but you'll like it I'm sure. I'm still in the Marine Corps, and selected for Staff Sgt (GO ME!!), but am getting out in June 2006. I graduate the police academy December 15th, and I can't wait. The love life is non-existent, so no serious girls in my life right now, well not ones I'd bring home to Mom anyway, and that's ok with me. The girl I was engaged too didn't work out, but at least I got the ring back (GO ME AGAIN!!) Training, School, Training, School, Training, School....not as interesting as your haircuts, and saving a $1000, but it gets got me through this year rather quick. If you were Marine, you'd probably triple that cost of the hair cut tab, considering you're in the Air Force with your relaxed grooming standards..I'm jealous. I will talk more about what I'm gonna do when I get out of the Marine Corps.....never know who's reading this. *looking around* OpSec Alan. OpSec!!! Be good man, God Bless, and lets try to keep in touch. Vin

I can't believe this website. It's incredible. I am speechless and you know that that does not happen often. So impressive and so much info. How do you have the time? I just used that Albert Einstein quote about insanity in an email I sent to my brother before leaving for the conference! Oh by the way, the quote that I told you at was from the movie Casual Sex in 1988. A guy is breaking up with a girl and he uses the following line to comfort her, "It's not you, it's me. I'm just not attracted to you". Or you could go with the orignal line you said you've never heard anyone say before "I live in Delaware".
:)
I'll definitely keep up with this and will be hoping for conference pics. I dont have my own website but my daughter's is always accessible on the babyhomepages.net site.
Good luck to you and keep in touch.

So I make my visit to your website once again, and have had a lot to catch up on. My computer is officially "dead", as was diagnosed by your brother, and it is most inconvenient to come to the school's computer lab whenever I feel like a good read. At any rate, I have come to a conclusion about movies... every one I like, you give a bad review, and each one I think, "Ugh! I can't believe I saw that!" you seem to like. I am testing this hypothesis, so continue with your reviews. And oh!! I think if you get some spare time you should put in a little description of your point system (I am pretty sure that you don't have one... I shall double check.) Of course it's apparent that a 3.5 is very good, but I think some small adjectives would help we readers to understand more clearly what you really are thinking. Just a thought. Hope all's well with you... when do you come again to visit?

Wow! It's been a while since I've checked in (and hey! my previous statement was the last one entered into your guestbook!). Great website! Have you ever been to Germany? I lived in Germany for 9 months in 97-98 as an au-pair. I went to the SSPX chapel in Neustadt. In January 2006 I am going to Italy (Rome, Florence, Milan, Assisi, Ravena) for 10 days as part of a singing group. We will be singing in different cathedrals and are trying to get an individual audience with the pope (you get close than just a generral audience). Have a great day. Ciao

I think you have the wrong definition for KITSCH. It actually means art, writing, or something else of a pretentious but shallow kind, caluculated to have popular appeal. So magazines like Cosmo would be kitschy. And I haven't forgotten the dips in the bar.

Hi Alan!
I am terrible at keeping in touch, so please forgive me. Anyway, as you know, I have the misfortune of being one of the mail people at the NATO Programming Centre and have recently had the very sad experience of having to stamp "attempted, not known" in horrible red letters on some mail which was meant for you (don't worry, just junk mail). This is because you have been gone longer than X amount of months. Although you are technically "attempted, not known", you are not forgotten.
After hemming and hawing for about 2 years, I finally broke down and bought a pocket pc (a dell X50) with the full gps kit so I will not spend such a large percentage of my life wandering around lost and frustrated. I think it just may save my marriage:) I had originally thought that I would only use the thing for the gps features. However, Dana loves the little computer and we wind up bargaining about who gets to walk around with it each day. One really fantastic use for it that I have found is reading e-books. I never thought that I could enjoy reading from any sort of computer screen, but with the help of freely available Microsoft Reader software, you very quickly forget that you are not reading a 'real' book. There is a web site called www.gutenberg.org which takes you to the aptly named gutenberg project. This is a network of thousands of volunteers worldwide that scan books which have exhausted their copyright limits (pre-1929, I think). You would be amazed at the amount of titles that are free to download from that site. There must be 50,000! You should check it out.
Also, we have been using the pocket pc (or, as I call it, the nerd computer) together with the gps receiver to have a lot of fun 'geocaching'. This is something that Henry Helmig let me know about. It is kind of an International hiking club that hides these little ammunition boxes out in the woods and provides clues from one GPS waypoint to another. The end-result is that you go to a place that you might otherwise not have visited, have a nice day out of the house, pay nothing for an afternoon of family activities, and have a lot of fun solving a puzzle and hunting treasure. Inside the box are fairly worthless knick-knacks that you may trade on a 'take something-leave something' basis. Since you have a pocket pc with a gps setup, and since you and I have always seemed to enjoy the same sort of hobbies, I thought that this would be something that you might really like. Check out www.geocaching.com to learn more and let me know what you think. You obviously can't use the regular tom-tom application for this, but I found a really nice program which is quite cheap ($30.00) and offers a 30 day demo period. It can be found at: http://www.visualgps.net/beelinegps/
It works pretty well.
It seems to me that I am presenting an infomercial for various products here! It is only that through the months I have been thinking of you as I find these sorts of things and think, "Alan would really like this".
Anyway, our family is heading to San Angelo, TX and Goodfellow AFB. We will leave Belgium in early July. Even though I have been doing everything I can to stay in Europe, somehow the U.S. Government thinks that I need to pay dearly for my ideal assignment in Belgium. Actually, Dana sent away for a welcome package from the chamber of commerce there and it doesn't look half as bad as I had originally imagined. There is a very large state park there and several lakes suitable for bass fishing (which I love to do). The kids will have more companions in the neighborhood with which to get into trouble.
Nonetheless, we will deeply miss Europe and especially Belgium. Dana and I went last night to the Apostlehuis (the pub up the road) and, although it was quite packed, we realized that there was absolutely nobody there that we didn't know well and love. Just as we have gotten to the point where we have become a real part of the very wonderful community of Rijkhoven, and have even gotten to the point of nearly conversational Flemmish speaking, we will be uprooted to the deserts of Texas where, as 'blue-state-ers', we will, most likely, be horribly out of place.
You might be interested to know that LTC Kross has been tapped to become a full bird Colonel. As I am sure you are aware, this comes as good news to the entire American community at NPC.
I am glad to hear that you are doing well and really appreciate that you have this web site that I can check up on. Although you probably won't hear from me for six months or so, that is merely a personality flaw on my part and it doesn't mean that you are out of the thoughts of the Quindry family.

Well, I was going to email you after reading your entry for the 8th (that'd be today!), but something's up with my account that I have to figure out. Ok, so here's my advice for motivating yourself... well, it's what I do anyhow. You know the song, Margaritaville? Jimmy Buffet... well if you have it, great, if not, get it! Blare it as loudly as you can, and bounce around your house like you're crazy. It makes you feel really happy, 'specially if you drink a 40 some odd oz. margarita yourself! (pah ha!) Then I'll usually do the same with Brown Eyed Girl... but I don't know that that'll do it for you! (hey! worth the shot though, eh?) Also, wearing socks with flip flops may sound gay, but it's something I dare you to try, if you've never indulged before. Keep your head high and you're posture straight... it's worth it after all. Take it easy.

Alan! Long time, no see. I hope your holidays aren't too shabby, but at least your time is just about up out there. You are the man. Guess what? I will be getting deployed with a RNLTD of 1 Jan 05. So perhaps I'm replacing you? Probably not, but it looks like it is now my turn out there in the desert. The fun never ends!!!! You'll have to throw out some essential tips on stuff to bring with me. Hang in there, it's less than a month now, right!?
Take care,

Hey A2, Man at the tip of the Spear! Glad to see that you still know how to keep everything in perspective, despite your current situation. Speaking of perspectives, Do you think Camp Victory would benifit from various donated books? I have a contact that is willing to donate boxes of books to troops downrange. Let me know if I can send these to you via MPS. With the holiday season coming up, I can organize various other things to send to you to distribute (ie baked goods, magazines, etc.) Talk to ya soon. Be Easy, But Not Sleazy! Ciao! Jason

Just a thought. You are an officer in the US Airforce openly stating on your site that you don't like your President. I always have an issue with active duty military publicly saying they don't like their President. Poor taste. But that's just my opinion
Military
USA - Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at 08:05:48 (PDT)
Alan:Actually I have not stated anything against the President. My only comment about the candidates was that I didn't like either of their answers during the debates. There is nothing anti-Presidential in that. Read my comments again and ask yourself if they say what you think they say. Oh and by the way, I know that you are a military person also. Charleston Naval Hospital, huh? Get your facts straight before I make fun of you on my Daily Journal!
I really enjoyed your web site and like you said "I can get lost looking at all of it!" I loved the pictures of Iraq, it was nice to see where my brother had once been. Alan, I have to thank you for more than quotes. I got one (actually two) of those 20Q games for my daughter and her friend and they love them--I do too. She keeps trying intangible things like "air" and "history". Some actually worked though I don't remember which ones. Thanks for the tip, here are a few quotes by Robert Orben:Never raise your hand to your children; it leaves your midsection unprotected.Sometimes I get the feeling the whole world is against me, but deep down I know that's not true. Alan Amato: All tongues are in cheek over here, I promise. In the words of Barbara Bush, "War is not nice." We aren't there in your shoes and there is no way we'll ever know what you are going through, but we are over here just trying to bring some smiles and joy to your day. Please forgive us if we gave you any other impression. Ms. Desert Rose certainly paints a mighty fine picture of you and we can only long to swap stories of cookies, underwear and photos with the legendary AA. Remember what Hubert H. Humphrey said, "The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."

Alan Amato:I tend to agree with Teresa. Ms. Desert Rose seems to be staking a claim here... and I don't necessarily mean that in a good way. Alas, you can rest assured that if you need a fresh dose of low maintenance loving, there are four groovy girls who are at your service. Xoxo, PJ

USA - Monday, September 13, 2004 at 10:38:42 (PDT)Alan:All right Groovy Girls, things are getting a little out of hand! I will be the first to admit that I all bark and no bite and besides I am not that kind of man. No, I did not write that guestbook entry myself but a very good friend of mine whom I have known for several years. She doesn't deserve to be jumped on for putting a perfectly harmless guestbook entry that sends a little love and joy my way. I encourage people to express themselves on my guestbook but please let's keep the gloves up. I want everyone to have a good time but not at the expense of feelings being hurt. Plus, I don't need any addition drama since I am still stationed in Iraq and in the middle of a 'war'. Thanks in advance for understanding. Let's continue to have a good time but tone down what we say, myself included.
Hey Alan,Desert Flower seems a bit ummmm possessive of your cute self. Seems to me that's what a charming man has to put up with! I'm just wondering if you wrote that to yourself? Puts a new spin on things, right? Teresa

Hello My Darling!! Yes I did what I was told, I'm signing your guestbook. Still on cloud nine!!! You know what I'm referring to, you always manage to surprise me. My turn now, even though your a hard one to top! I mean that in the most innocent way(cookies, underwear, pictures).I was going through the Pix once again, I think I've looked at the same ones a hundred times. Your NY trip, the B bridge and Manhattan from the B bridge(b&W), can't get enough of them. You know I love all your pictures, except the cheesy mustache one, that one gives me the creeps! You love it I know, but...Yikes!!! I confess there are some days when I can't get you out of my head. So off I go to the PIX and just browse for as long as need be. The week you left I spent quite a bit of time thumbing through, Cathy was giving me the eye because she couldn't believe I was still on alanamato.com. You'll be happy to know I deleted a few lines, I started to babble about how wonderful you are but decided to save it for my personal emails to you. Anyways, It's that time and the kids (niece and nephew)will be up soon, so I should say "Goodnight"!! I miss you a ton and I'm counting down the days until we have our 3rd visit. Our visits are short, but very interesting, our next should be a record week long!! What would we do with all that time, HMMMM!!!Sending you hugs!! Take Care.P.S. Cassaundra(my niece)was asking about you today, wanted me to tell you "hello" from her.

Hey Alan, see your busy. I didn't check ur site for a while being the busy bee that I am but I just read your diary and I totally agree with u on the stupid, futile laws, involving innocent citizens. I'm not in the US but I wouldn't like it. The thing is the paranoia can get very far, to where everything will be so "controlled", it would/could get like a world dictatorship, just to keep us all safe. Sucks! Anyway, when I want to have a change of scenery for my brain I check ur site (and the pics), it's nice to partake of another's life. Thank you for opening urs up. Keep up the good works. Kris

Alan Amato: Don't blush dear. You should totally claim your hotness! I think Eugene Levy said it best in the movie Bringin' Down the House: "Your cool points are out the window and you got me all twisted up in the game!"Frankly, the pictures sold me alone, until I read your profile, quotes and interests. Then I just plain fell in love :) And now you are bordering a full on Groovy Girl hobby! You are ADORABLE!!!! And don't beleive what Teresa says about me breakin' the hearts. The truth is, I am no threat at all alone. Now... put us together (I'm the blond and she's the redhead) and well... you can only imagine. Between the two of us, we make the perfect woman!

If you'd like, we can wait until you return? You might just get a big kick out of a weekend with the Groovy Girls. Just a thought. Hey!Mom's always win in the cookie race, alas we can only hope to come in a close second! Our story? Our story, like many others, has lots of twists and turns. But I believe that if we could only see our lives from about 100 ft. above them then we'd see how close they are to other's lives. I have quite a few girlfriends who hang out with me and, well we're the groovy girls, and so we'd gone to Albany, Georgia (the place where I was born and where my parents live) to get a "groovy girl car" so we could pull a trailer (has to do with my business) and I wanted it to be big enough that all the groovy girls could fit into it so when we took a groovy girl trip -- first trip scheduled is Charleston-- (Pretty strange huh)we'd have a great trip car. Well, I was surfing the web looking at cars and then somehow got on a keanu reeves website, sortof like when my nephew & husband ordered "Bare wench project" and both swore the other did it. You don't know how it happens it just does. (BTW this happened while my husband was ill and my nephew was helping me take care of him. He died 9/2/02 and took the secret of who really ordered the movie with him) Anyway, I saw the picture of you with Keanu and then went to your web site and then of course I had to say hello and insult you and then the girls said they had to watch me all the time as I'm constantly putting my foot in it. ANYWAY, I bought a 2004 Yukon-- big enough to pull a trailer and to fit bunches of crazy girls in it for road trips-- and I still have my little toyota for tooling around town in. Beth is my business partner and a WONDERFUL cook, the only thing I've baked since Steve's death is brownies-- he was the chef in the family-- so, rest easy as she's really in charge of the goodies! Caren is my cousin and we wanted you to know we were thinking of you and sending you happy thoughts. If you want to see a picture of me (although I'm not with Keanu reeves or anyone famous, I do think you'll think the photo is funny) you can see it at the yahoo personals website. (I don't recommend joining the site as most of the people who have written me have been 150 years old on the average-- not that there is anything wrong with that--) My name is zookeeper318. Click on the large picture and I think you'll laugh. It was at a halloween function last year. You keep your head down and let your guardian angels do their job protecting you. I've sent mine, Thomas, to do some extra checking too! Teresa

I'm a camera freak and love to scrapbook. Talk soon.

Atlanta, Ga USA - Thursday, September 02, 2004 at 18:28:32 (PDT)Alan:Nicole, yes it has been at least 5 years and probably closer to ten since I saw you last. Time flies... I hope all is well with you. If you going to be in Atlanta long you will have to send me your address. That is only 4.5 hours from Charleston. Stay in touch.
You didn't offend me! I thought you'd like the sewing on a penis story. Pretty interesting coming from my 80 year old father. Indeed we are visiting your site and are even now trying to stuff a number of cookies and bread into Glad Containers, hoping we'll get bonus points for being first to send them to you. Teresa (Beth and Caren are here with me hoping I won't offend you!--Mouth works faster than brain!)

Tallahassee, Fl USA - Wednesday, September 01, 2004 at 19:40:58 (PDT)Alan:Teresa, you came back! It will be a close race between you and my mom as to who will be the first one to get a package to me. So what is the story with you ladies?
Hey Alan, I accidentally tumbled into your pages and ....you're interesting. I liked some of the quotes, pretty deep! I'm into people as a profession and hobby but can't figure you out. You seems abnormally outgoing, as a sunsign, what are you? My best guesses would be Sage,Leo, Gemini. But again.. You name, Amato, doesn't it have to do with "love" as in "beloved"? Anyway, it's refreshing to see your site. Take care, Kris PS I just saw your pic with KR (pretty sad eyes), say Happy Bday, I'm not a fan (God forbid) but as a human being to another, especially in times like these (and \i bet his bday is the last thing to think on). I've been praying for him and especially for Kim.

Yo, Big Al! It me--The Jay MoDiggity-- "Chillin like a villain with a cold, cool feelin!" How bout you? Probably not, since you got to do your time in the sandbox :-) Been there, done that, got the t-shirt + the millions of complimentary grains of sand that I am still trying to shake :-) Glad you added me to your VIP list, or is it another kinda "list?" LOL! First time I have made it over to your glorious homepage, and I must say....You have too much time on you hands...Just Kidding :-) No seriously, I was very impressed with the organization and documentation of your daily life events. I even have been thinkin about doing something like this, so I don't look back on my life and say what @#$% did do with my life! It would be a good insurance policy against Alzheimer’s. I didn't get to spend too much time "Being Alan Amato," but I did spend enough time to come across a pic of old Jimmy D. How is that trick doing? I would appreciate if you could give me his e-mail address. I do plan on coming back regularly to check out your daily journal. You got the last e-mail I sent, so write back if you get a chance. I'm living in Maastricht, so when you are finished in the "Pit" you are more than welcome to roll on through and hang with me and my "Dirty Dutch Crew."CiaoStylz

Maastricht, Limburg Netherlands - Wednesday, September 01, 2004 at 10:37:50 (PDT)Alan:Jason, good to hear you are partying it up IIT style. You wrote a novel for a guestbook entry. No worries, the more the better. Can you send me some cute Dutch women in a box, please? There is plenty to go around, I know I've been to Maastricht. Ciao
I've used a number of quotes from the quote page and it seems timely to add a few women's quotes (offense not intended--just humor):My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint. -Erma Bombeck-Whatever women must do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult. -Charlotte Whitton-I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb -- and I'm also not a blonde. -Dolly Parton-I'm not going to vacuum 'til Sears makes one you can ride on. -Roseanne Barr-When women are depressed they either eat or go shopping.Men invade another country. -Elayne Boosler-Behind every successful man is a surprised woman. -Maryon Pearson-I have yet to hear a man ask for advice on how to combine marriage and a career. -Gloria Steinem-I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house. -Zsa Zsa Gabor-

USA - Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 08:27:39 (PDT)Alan:Cindy, thanks for your quotes. I'm not sure that I will incorporate all of them but some of them are just too funny. Keep 'em coming and please come back soon.
Don't know the dr or Lt. Boone but being a woman is tough as proven by my father after caring for my mother after her knee replacement. He had to do for 6 weeks what she'd done for him for 57 years and he said if he had been born a woman, knowing what all women did in a day, he would've sewn on a penis and be done with it! So a "chronic disorder"? give us women a break! Teresa

I never really took the time to read many of your book reviews before. I wanted to say "Thank you Captain Obvious" about the end of the John Grisham book being anticlimatic. ALL of his books lack a climax. ALL of them! It is always disappointing when there is no climax (in any situation..wink wink...lol) I also think you need to read Davinci's Code and Angels and Demons and review those. If you say they are anything less than phenominal you are full of it! So there....

On your little rave page you ask where the morals in our country ahve gone....they are still the same...we are just less secretive about them. JFK was having massive amounts of adulterous sex with Marilyn Monroe, but it wasn't pasted all over the television, where as Bill Clinton just gets a little head and its on the news for months. Its not the country's morals that have changed, it is how they are broadcasted!

Alan! You will never guess what Iran across -- remember that ridiculous word of the day calendar thatyou had and we would have a laugh at how obscure some of the wordsare? On page 175 of Steinbeck's East of Eden, in the new edition thatis going around bookstores now, -- Weltschmerz!!!! I almost diedlaughing. Of course, it is so obscure that Steinbeck has to explainthe word as soon as he uses it, but I got a real kick out of seeingit. By the way, haven't finished it yet, but I am thinking that bookis going into at least the 'top three I have ever read' column. Never convinceyourself that time is real, or you will never have it." 6.) "Alife full of indecision means you choose neither path, therefore, nothing lays ahead." Alan:Please connect the dots for me...pretty please with sugar on top.
I stumbled onto your website from a link to your fantasticquotes page. I however do take some exception to you view onevolution and science in general. I assume you occupy some minorfunction in the air force which does not require you to thinkscientifically for any length of time. I therefore understand thefervor with which you refuse to put any stock in scientific theories. You are correct many scientific theories are incomplete but a theorylike evolution has a tremendous amount of supporting evidence whichyou choose to ignore. When you believe in religion and put all ofyour faith in it you are saying that the rules that govern ouruniverse are not worth knowing or cannot be fully known, so insteadbelieve whatever you want to believe. This is quite reminiscent of achild who doesn't understand mathematics, quitting and just making uprelations between numbers. Further your views also negate a milleniaof scientific discovery. Every time a new discovery was made thechurch retracted its faith in some of its tenets. Science onlyrequires you to keep an open mind and prove any theory you concoct asthe causal relation between events. If you can prove it with datathat can be repeated by someone else your theory is valid. Trykeeping an open mind religion answers your question about first causebe making god the axiomatic first cause that required no predecessor.Science relies on data and as such they create various theories aboutfirst causes. Some theories which reflect einsteins relativityobviate this by making the question of beginning meaningless.. thatis the universe is temporally cyclical... At any rate, keep an openmind. p.s. great pictures do you mind if I use the bullring picturesfor a wallpaper?
